Janna Levin is an American theoretical cosmologist and professor of physics and astronomy at Barnard College. As a guest on the Startalk series with American astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, Janna covers a broad range of topics. I chose to feature this video because of her discussion on the connection between art and science at Pioneer Works, a nonprofit cultural arts center in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, where in her words the two disciplines of art and science “riff out each other”. Janna has also written a series of essays to accompany exhibitions at the Rustin School of Drawing and Fine Art and the Hayward Gallery.
Fabian Oefner is a talented photographer based in Switzerland whose work marries visual aesthetics and science. He works from his photo studio on assignments for various industries and realizes free projects. Most of his work has to do with bringing science and art together. He often uses natural phenomena that appear in our daily lives, being it sound waves, or iridescence, responsible for the stunning colours in soap bubbles. The main aim of his work is to show these phenomena in previously unseen and poetic ways, encouraging viewers to pause for a moment and appreciate the magic that constantly surrounds us.
Paul Feynman was an American theoretical physicist best known for his work in quantum mechanics. He was a Nobel Prize award for his work in physics. He was also an artist. This video, which marked what would have been his 100th birthday, was an inspiration for my “The art of Physics” platform. It is as a way to connect art and physics as a key interdisciplinary approach to learning.
Zaha Hadid was an Iraqi-British architect, artist and designer, recognised as a key figure in architecture of the late-20th and early-21st centuries. Born in Baghdad, Iraq, Hadid studied mathematics as an undergraduate "reinvestigate the aborted and untested experiments of Modernism… to unveil new fields of building".
Aidan Rhoades is a metalworks artist who double majored in physics and arts at Clemson University. This video, despite its promotional nature, is a nice window into the benefits of an interdisciplinary perspective that comes from a double major. His creation, “Horizon,” is on display at Kinard Laboratory of Physics and Astronomy at Clemson.
